This One Simple Trick…

…will change your life! Did you always wonder how some people manage to be so much more spiritual? How do they manage to be so wise, calm, and happy? How do they get so much from their prayers? Read this article and I will reveal the one simple stick that all the spiritual masters have discovered…

141120_rectorThat is all a lie of course. This type of purple prose is often called click bait and is used to convince people to click on a web link and buy something or believe something. There is no trick or technique or even ten-step program for spiritual growth. There is no secret to experiencing the abundance and joy that comes from knowing and loving God.

Wouldn’t it be great if there were? Wouldn’t it be great if crash diets worked and we could keep all the weight off? There are no tricks or shortcuts or techniques for most of the things that we really care about, or for most of the things that really matter in life.

To lose weight and keep it off, you have to change the way you eat and get more exercise. To experience the abundance and joy of knowing and loving God, you have to make the same kinds of changes. What we need is not a new trick or even a technique but a rule of life. Health comes from learning a healthier diet and engaging in appropriate levels of exercise. Spiritual health and vitality comes from keeping the spiritual practices of our faith.

The purpose of a diet or health program is not superficial: to look good in a bathing suit or to meet a cultural standard of beauty; but to be healthy, to be strong and well enough to accomplish one’s goals. Focusing on the value behind the goal is what the rule of life is about.

Daily prayer, stewardship, and weekly worship are all parts of an effective rule of life. Our stewardship theme this year, Pay It Forward, is another great example. Paying it forward is a way of living in right and healthy relationship with God and one another that leads to the blessings of abundance and joy. The reason the idea of paying it forward is so appealing is that we know intuitively the blessings we experience when we pay it forward with generosity, compassion, or kindness. Pay It Forward is a wonderful way to live. As a one-time event, Pay It Forward can at best lead to good feelings. As a way of life, Pay It Forward connects us to the joyful abundance of God’s love.

Yours in Christ,
David+

P.S. Thank you to all of you who have pledged to Pay It Forward at St. Dunstan’s Church with your pledge for 2015.
