Christian Response to the Holiday Buying Orgy!

151112_saintsSo you don’t know what to buy for some family member, neighbor, friend, or stranger this time of year—here is an idea do something for that person, AND don’t tell anyone else what you did! The current publication from AARP (I know—old people stuff!) lists 100 ideas to gift someone, like do errands for them, bring over a DVD you can watch together, take someone to an appointment, on and on.

The problem many of us have is stepping outside of our comfort zone, giving a part of ourselves and time for the good of another. It can be as simple as sending a note, making a phone call, sending an email or a text. It really is about “I am thinking about you, giving you space in my life, wanting you to be a part of me.”

Holiday dinners—there is a good one! Instead of allowing someone to sit home alone, invite them to your house for dinner and time to share in your family celebration; it’s just one more at table. So they may get teary and you do not know what to say—give them a hug at the door, sit them down in a comfortable place, and pack up leftovers to be taken home—think about what that would do for someone. Do you know a person living in a care facility? If they can get into the car, bring them home for a holiday dinner.

We get all carried away about being “spiritual.” Give it a rest—and take care of someone else for once. Stop trying to “be holy and good.” Instead, sit down with a deck of cards or board games, watch a sporting event on TV with someone who is alone, laugh and joke, eat and drink—find the Presence of the Holy in those moments, because time is short, hearts break, and only caring love can make it bearable.

See you next week,
I am your bro. John, O.C.P.
