Saints Are Us: Saint Louis IX

saints 0828Louis is considered the Patron Saint of Third Order Franciscans. He led an austere and prayer-filled life, and embodied the highest ideals of medieval Christian Kingship. He lived a Franciscan life of poverty, simplicity, and self-denial in the midst of royal splendor.
He participated in the Crusades in 1248 and 1270. He built churches and cared for his people. All of this made up his life as a monarch, yet in his heart and soul he was a faithful son of Francis of Assisi. He led a life of inner poverty, detachment from the world and loving Our Lord above all else. We can see him as a model in our lives, to use what we have and who we are to advance the Kingdom of Jesus Christ on earth.

St. Elizabeth of Hungary 1207-1231, who shares the title of Patron Saint of the Third Order Franciscans, is celebrated on November 19th. She led a life of Franciscan Simplicity and Charity while being a member of royalty.

See you next week.

I am your bro.
